Black Nashville Votes

Black Nashville Votes is a Fight for Democracy project creating the foundation to birth a people-driven democracy in the South, starting in Nashville, Tennessee, while organizing for power. We use civic, political, and voter education to ensure our community has the information they need to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

As a political engagement and movement-building organization, we are committed to leadership development and democratic leadership to build the democracy that will enable our community to create safe, thriving, and healthy communities. We are using advocacy, power building, and political engagement to invest in and implement community-driven forms of safety, fully-fund education, increase affordable housing, and expand good-paying jobs.

Values and Principles

  • We are committed to building a people-driven democracy and fighting for the power to govern our communities with Black, queer and trans, immigrant, youth, incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, disabled, and working-class communities. We recognize that democracy has yet to be born in this country, and it is our work to birth a form of democracy and governance that centers our humanity, racial justice, care, and collective power.

  • We are committed to ending all forms of racism and oppression, including criminalization, incarceration, and poverty, and shifting towards healing, reconciliation, and economic democracy. It is this commitment that drives our vision and practice of participatory democracy.

  • We are committed to building relationships within our communities and growing together. This commitment enables us to engage in the organizing, relationship-building, and leadership development our communities need to build and fight for democracy.

  • People directly impacted and forced to live on the margins are most equipped to create solutions and strategies to change our communities. That principle guides our work and ensures that our work will center and focus on communities most impacted by incarceration, policing, criminalization, displacement, and underfunded supportive services.
